Title: Demystifying Data Science for Real-World Problems
Abstract
The terms like
data science, business analytics, business intelligence, and big data are
gaining popularity in the business world and academic circles like nothing else
that we have witnessed in the recent history. Although named differently, these
terms seem to have a common theme, in fact most people considers them as
synonyms. Generally speaking, data science is the art and science of extracting
insightful knowledge from large quantities of varied data sources by leveraging
sophisticated mathematical/statistical models along with subject matters experts’
knowledge to support accurate and timely decision making. In a sense, analytics
and data science are all about decision making and problem solving. Why has
analytics and data science become so popular? Why now? Is it something
new/novel? This presentation will attempt to answer these questions, and by
doing so, will demystify the underlying terms/concepts of data science and
business analytics with real-world applications ranging from healthcare and
medicine to entertainment and education.
